In January of 2016, whilst a student in SHS, our Church (Destiny International Covenant Church, Adenta Branch) got a new Pastor (Pastor James). He was our Home-Cell leader as well, who insisted on scripture memorisation, which was new to me. Two years later, Pastor James adopted me, and that’s how I ended up moving into his home, and Uncle Nii Nortey (Pastor James) became my father.  He was then on the leadership team of the Navigators Legon Campus Ministry, and he went along with me to the Bible study he led with the student leaders on Legon campus.

My experience of that first Bible study left me amazed, especially how the leaders asked questions.  It was like they were preparing for exams. Over there, I met Abigail Owusu (now Mrs. Boateng) and Joshua Baidoo, among others. Something ignited in me that day, and I wanted to be like them as I watched and listened to them in subsequent meetings.

Then I went to the 2018 Nav Youth camp. The change started from there; the desire grew, and the need to please others started fading. I think the theme was about pruning and bearing more fruit. Was I even bearing any fruit at all to be pruned? I started asking myself deep questions. Quiet Time was also spoken about during the Camp. (What was that?) A time to just sit down? Who does that? I wasn’t used to that. But I learnt to sit alone and take the bible and read. I mean, sit alone and meet with God. Looking back, I can point to various ways in which God has impacted my life for good. Here are a few.

1. I’ve got a family and a lasting friendship within the Navigators.
2. I became confident in speaking and sharing the word of God with others. I had the desire to allow God to work on me.
3. I have grown in the world; I let go of hurt and hurting myself by thinking only negative things. I let go of a lot of things.
4. My life has changed for the better. I see things differently now. Thank God for mentors like Rhoda & Herty who made time for me, listened to me, and spoke into my life.

Now, I can confidently say that all things work together for good for those who love God and are called according to his purpose, because I wasn’t sure how staying with Uncle Nii Nortey would be, but God used that to work on me. Glory to God.
