Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him! (Psa 34:8 BSB)
God invites us to experience for ourselves the reality of His word and the truth of His promises. There is an experience that is open to all, the most highly educated and illiterate alike – the evidence of experience. Instead of depending on the word of another, we are to taste for ourselves. They have never failed; they never would fail. As we draw near to Jesus and rejoice in the fullness of His love, our doubt and darkness will disappear in the light of His presence.
“Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you without money, come, buy, and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost! Why spend money on that which is not bread, and your labor on that which does not satisfy? Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good, and your soul will delight in the richest of foods (Isa 55:1-2, BSB). The Love, suffering, and death of the Son of God all testify to the terrible enormity of sin and declare that there is no escape from its power, no hope of the higher life, but through the submission of the soul to Christ.
Delaying in yielding to the pleading voice of God’s Holy Spirit and choosing to live in sin is a terrible danger. Sin, however small it may be esteemed, can be indulged in only at the peril of infinite loss. What we do not overcome, will overcome us and work out our destruction. Let us not regard sin as a trivial thing. Calvary stands as a memorial of the amazing sacrifice required to atone for the transgression of God’s law.
Christ is the source of every right impulse. He is the only one who can implant in the heart enmity against sin. Every desire for truth and purity, every conviction of our own sinfulness, is evidence that His Spirit is moving upon our hearts. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled (Mat 5:6, BSB). Our Father’s word and promises have never failed, and they can never fail.
